As an English instructor teaching over twenty years in different countries, I have come to conclude that vocabulary teaching in isolation somehow may not produce the expected outcome unless they are used and practised in meaningful contexts. We keep asking why the students do not know the words in the texts they read or why they cannot use the words in their actual conversations when they encounter a new context such as the context of visiting a dentist, watching a football match, passing through customs or taking their cars to a mechanic. There has also been a need for teachers and materials developers to pay more and more attention to ways of providing students with meaningful materials and content that allow them to engage in “real” communication. With this problem in mind we have prepared this book and tried to include as many familiar situations as possible for them to acquaint with. Several cultural and local issues have been added to make it more attractive and informative because dialogs: • provide a context • practise directly - use language directly • have a strong link between language and situation as there is a physical setting • improve oral communication for survival English as they are necessary for rudimentary life skills The purpose of this book is twofold; to introduce various conversational situations to students to study on their own and to guide teachers to improve their students' competence in daily, even unexpected contexts. As teachers, we can control the classroom language but when the students go out and are left without the guidance of their course book, they have to deal with several everday events in which they have to use and expand their vocabulary interacting with people of different professions and ages. Therefore, studying this book will give them the richness of everyday conversations and equip them with exceptional expressions of everyday communication topics such as commenting, asking, complaining so they will react, in turn, using the cliche patterns making their own style. The dialogs in this book can also be used for listening, note taking and dictation and for role plays.
